Robert Creeley

The poet Robert Creeley (1926-2005) wrote cover blurbs for two of Maggie Nelson’s poetry collections: “The Scratch-Scratch Diaries” in Take Three, New Poets Series (1998) and The Latest Winter (2003). As guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2002, Creeley included Nelson’s poem “Sunday Night” from her collection Shiner (2001).

Robert Creeley taught at Black Mountain, the experimental liberal arts college, along with many of the writers, artists, and musicians that influenced American avant-garde. Robert Creeley was the Samuel P. Capen Professor of Poetry and Humanities at State University of New York at Buffalo, and New York’s Poet Laureate from 1989-1991. In his later years, he was a mentor to many younger poets. Maggie Nelson dedicates the poem “The Deep Blue Sea,” in Shiner, to Creeley.Image
